Chapter Six

Hayden spaced out again for a minute while he thought about all I said. I left him alone, discreetly flagging down our waiter so I could pay our bill. It was early in the night, and we’d ended up talking about the possibility of him being my boy and the rules he’d have earlier than I’d expected, so I’d let him pick what we did next.

The waiter bringing back my card and receipt jolted Hayden out of his head. He waited until the young man left, then leaned in with a twinkle in his pretty blue eyes. “So what do I have to do to get the fun kind of spanking?”

I adored this about him already. He definitely hid a lot behind a mask of bitchiness, but I had a feeling this boy’s default would be a little bit bratty, mixed with a whole lot of feisty, the more comfortable he became. As long as he allowed me the hints of vulnerability and obeyed my rules, we’d get along just fine. “Maybe that’ll be a reward one day. Would you like that, cupcake?”

He waggled his brows. “You bet I would.”

I chuckled. “It’s still early. I’d planned for us to have dinner, and then go somewhere quiet to talk about us. I think our conversation’s given you enough to think about, so what would you like to do now? It can be anything you want.”

“Can we go back to my house and watch a movie or something?”

Was he not enjoying our time together as much as I was? “Are you sure? I’m open to anything. The sky’s the limit. I want you to enjoy yourself.”

He shook his head, baffled. “I believe you, and I appreciate that, but I’d really like to be alone with you and relax. I kind of need to let our conversation marinate, you know?”

Nodding, I took my napkin off my lap, tossed it on the table, and stood. “I do.”

As I pulled out his chair, he looked up at me. “Is that really okay? If you want to do something more exciting, that’s fine.”

Taking his hand, I helped him stand, then brushed my lips over his temple. “As long as I’m with you, I’ll happily do anything.”

His cheeks turned a lovely shade of pink. It amused me that Christian had warned me that Hayden was dramatic. So far, he’d been a pleasure in every way. While we walked out of the restaurant hand in hand, I toyed with inviting him back to my house, but I didn’t want to overwhelm him with the sheer size of my place. The opportunity to spend time with me in his own space was probably the wisest choice.

By the time I parked in the visitor section of his complex, Hayden was shifting around nervously in his seat. “Are you sure you want me to come in? We can call it a night if you’d like.”

His hand shot out and gripped my forearm. “No. I want you to stay. I’m just… You’re being so patient with me, and I’m worried that I’ll let you down.
